An Evening With Tyler Mitchell @ The Museum of Modern Art April 11
Photographer and filmmaker Tyler Mitchell will present his short films Chasing Pink, Found Red, and Idyllic Space both 2019) alongside a screening of Charles Burnett’s To Sleep with Anger (1990). This program is the latest iteration of Night at the Cinema, a film screening and conversation forum begun by Mitchell online during the initial pandemic lockdown.

Lesser Miracle @ David Lewis Gallery (April 7-30, by appointment only)
The debut gallery exhibition of up and coming, Brooklyn based furniture design studio Lesser Miracle presents their debut exhibition. Drawing influence from medieval, Islamic, and American craft traditions as well as pulp fantasy (the design duo’s name references a spell in Dungeons & Dragons), Lesser Miracle’s furniture strikes a fine balance between the functional and esoteric.

The Hong Sangsoo Multiverse: A Retrospective of Double Features @ Lincoln Center (April 8-17 and May 4-10)
Film at Lincoln Center presents “The Hong Sangsoo Multiverse: A Retrospective of Double Features”, a series presenting the prolific writer-director’s output in a series of double features leading up to the

Whitney Biennial 2022: Quiet as It’s Kept @ The Whitney Museum (April 6 – Sept 5)
The Whitney Museum begins the 80th edition of its exhibition showcasing sixty-three intergenerational and interdisciplinary, key voices in contemporary art. Curators David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards began planning Quiet as It’s Kept in 2019, and the final exhibition reflects the cultural climate of both a pre and post COVID world. Features work by Aria Dean, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Rick Lowe, and more.

Alexandria Smith: Pretend Gravitas and Dream Aborted Givens (April 28 – June 4) @ Gagosian, Park & 75, New York
Mixed-media artist Alexandria Smith’s first solo exhibition with Gagosian gallery, the show will feature all new works by the artist, exploring “selfhood alongside the confidences, contradictions, and uncertainties of the queer Black femme body.” Smith is known for her collage drawings and works of assemblage, including paintings that incorporate wood and clay sculptural elements layered on top, in custom frames. An opening reception will be held at the gallery from 6-8 on April 28.

Gig with Huerco S: A West Mineral Take Over @ Public Records (April 15)
In 2016, musical artist Brian Leeds (a.k.a. Huerco S.) released his breakthrough album For Those Of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have), which has since become a cult classic among fans of ambient and electronic music. Earlier this year Leeds returned with his first album in six years, the experimental Plonk, which found him exploring more rhythmic and industrial soundscapes. On April 15, he’ll bring his distinct sonic sensibility to Public Records for a night of forward thinking dance music.

Gateways Music Festival Orchestra @ Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage (April 24)
Gateways Music Festival Orchestra, featuring classical musicians of African descent, make their Carnegie Hall debut with a performance of works by Brahms, G. Walker, and Price, along with James V. Cockerham’s vibrant Fantasia on Lift Every Voice and Sing. Jon Batiste, who earlier this month won the Grammy award for Best Album, will join the orchestra as well for the world premiere of new work.

Long Play Festival @ Various (April 29—May 1)
Originally scheduled for May 2020, Bang on a Can, a contemporary classical music institution, will hold its inaugural Long Play Festival. A three
day series taking place at multiple venues across the city, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Center for Fiction, highlights will include performances by Sun Ra Arkestra, Vijay Iyer, and Kelly Moran.

The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham’s Kaleidoscope @ New York Botanical Garden (Closes May 1)
This is the last month to see the New York Botanical Garden’s 19th annual Orchid Show. Star designer Jeff Leathem has transformed the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory into a living kaleidoscope made up of thousands of orchids and tunnels of light. Originally debuted in 2020, Kaleidoscope was on track to become the NYBG’s most popular orchid show yet before being prematurely closed due to Covid.
