Marissa Wilson’s view on the metasphere for AW22.

Fashion reflects the culture. That truism manifests every day, whether on runways during a given fashion week or on the street. In her first show after launching her brand in 2017, Marrisa Wilson NY embraced the metasphere in a very literal sense. A gifted illustrator, as part of the show, she created three drawings available for sale as NFTs. She also created a limited-edition bomber jacket with NFT tie-in.

“This convergence of digital and physics identities and blurring lines – for me, it’s all one collection. It doesn’t really matter. It’s my art and my craft,” she said, post- show.

What does matter to her a great deal is furthering awareness among her contemporaries. “It was about making sure there’s space for women, and in particular women of color, to be able to play and explore these spaces. Because what I realize when I talk to other women of color about NFTs and all of the language that goes behind it, people don’t really understand it.”

Still, this is fashion, and (for now at least) the physical clothes still matter. Wilson sees her collection as one of interesting pieces that women can easily integrate into their wardrobes. To She thus styled the looks for plenty or range.  A dizzying digital print top over sweats had a cool street vibe; similar pants paired with a sweater vest and shirt projected bookish appeal. The integration of tailoring throughout lent an aura of chic polish. And if at times, variety trumped focus, that’s one of the of the challenges and joys of a first runway show – establishing the creative baseline to refine over time.

Wilson’s excitement over that upcoming journey was palpable, for her bow, she bounded joyfully down the runway, wearing a jacket that literally spelled out her approach future on its back: “Power on!”
