Matty Bovan analyses the modern American spirit for AW22.
Matty Bovan is embracing the modern American dream and spirit. Presenting in The Crypt on Friday, the designer told a story about his exploration of the United States, politically divided, surviving through the pandemic. Bovan spent two months in the deepest part of Connecticut in November 2021, researching and analysing American folk art books, extrapolating what compounds the Great American Spirit.
Combining tactile fabrics like heavy jersey and denim in a patchwork style given the infamous Matty Bovan wide shoulder approach , the clothes embraced the heavy patriotism of the States with meticulously hand knit lace folk-style American flags alongside draped , matched along Scottish wools featuring Bovan’s travel diary photos and notes, exploring the thought process of the designer’s quest.
Expanding the branches of creativity, this was Matty’s first collection shown on men, signifying further the fluid, gender-neutral approach towards the story and garments. Dipping into the ever growing concept of ready-made, classic signature staples such as Calvin Klein jeans, the Vivienne Westwood tailored jacket and the Adidas tracksuit were reconstructed and reimagined through their eyes and tailored within the Matty Bovan universe, which is an incredibly exciting one that blends the poetical approach of telling a story that is equal parts political and equal parts brilliantly conceptual.
