Met Gala 2023: Karl Lagerfeld’s 16 best runway moments.

Karl Lagerfeld was a designer that ushered a revolution in fashion - his demure and love for women created supermodels in the face of Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford, just to name a few. His specific sketches, and ideas of celebrating the beauty of now was witnessed across his years heading Fendi, Chanel and Chloé. Playing upon an idea of self-irony and worldly adoration, Lagerfeld’s Chanel shows became fiery spectacles - think Chanel’s rocket launch for AW17, transporting us to Cuba for Cruise 2016, putting together the Chanel supermarket for AW14, and many other grand observations, served and staged across Grand Palais in Paris.

The rich archive of ideas, personally sketched out and executed into meticulous detail, represented Lagerfeld’s constant thirst for knowledge, and his curiousity of the ever-changing world. Launching many current fashion faces like Cara Delevingne, Kristen Steward and Lily Rose-Depp into grand stardom, the designer always aimed at expressing his opinion, and exploratory vision outwards into his collections. This year’s Met Gala exhibition, co-chaired by Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, and Roger Federer, aims to showcase the creative beginnings, and rich archive of Lagerfeld’s life - from his formative years as a designer at Chloé, throughout the 30+ years at Fendi, and his biggest tenure at Chanel.
