Labrum London celebrates the spirit of interpersonal connections for SS23.
This season, Foday Dumbuya celebrates the rich heritage of cultures by painting an image of a borderless society, where each individual feels celebrated. Labrum’s show on Saturday was not just a catwalk, it was a celebration of people. Staged at 180 Strand, Dumbuya, who was born in Sierra Leone before moving to London, took inspiration from his multidimensional childhood, merging both places into one space. Additionally, Labrum’s team were all encouraged to share family photos of their own upbringings, in order to bring further inspiration and a clear message of togetherness for one cause, which is the designer’s main frontier - making sure everyone is recognised.
The colours of the collection, existing in a harmonious matrimony of chartreuse, creamy white, ocean blue, brown and soft pink, were all inspired by Mark Rothko’s technique of blending contrasting colours alongside pastels - all expressing Foday Dumbuya’s mixture of environments throughout his life.
During the show, Labrum also featured their very first monogram - a leaf-like breeze multiplying across zipped polo shirts, bomber jackets, and relaxed trousers. The honest beauty and open vulnerability of Foday Dumbuya echoed throughout the venue, with the performance of Freetown Uncut alongside Drizilik and DJ Rampage bringing everyone together to celebrate his goal of bringing people together - all by sharing each other’s vulnerability.
