LaQuan Smith bridges sensuality and confidence for AW22.

LaQuan Smith began his show with a moment of silence for the recently deceased Andre Leon Talley, an early proponent of the designer who was present at his New York Fashion week debut in 2010. Sexy, energized, and glamorous, the show took place in the former Down Town Association, a private members club dating back to 1859. Newly single Julia Fox opened, wearing a shapely black dress with fabric missing from a select few spots around her chest and back. While a number of the looks wouldn’t have been out of place seen in the pre-show cocktail hour in the downstairs lounge, others were more colorful and risque.

Occasional bright red and cerulean monochrome looks, turtlenecks with strips of fabric strategically removed around the torso, and sequined coats balanced formality with fun. The show ended on a high note, a scarlet, sheer red dress that expanded near the bottom into a wide bell of heavy, plush trim that swung around the model’s legs with as much attitude as her walk. If the decision to cast Fox wasn’t enough of a tip-off, Smith continues to design clothes for confident women who write their own headlines.
