“You are trying, I am not. You care, I dont.” Tommy Cash on doing things on his own terms, and the creation of DIESELTOPIA.

Diesel and Tommy Cash have both expressed their love for the D. The signature element, shaped by Glenn Martens’s vision has taken centre stage in the newest project called DIESELTOPIA, where irony brings together the Estonian musician and artist’s vision, creating a cult-like following, reflecting the cult fashion that sparks excitement nowadays. Tommy Cash has become one of the most exciting faces to spot during the fashion week season, as he brings forward a performance element everywhere he goes - whether it is knitting himself a new outfit, carrying a full fledged mattress onto his back and sleeping across the runway, or being wheeled out as a baby in a stroller - his avantgarde ideas are always executed on his own terms.

Speaking to Perfect about his matrimony with Diesel, and starring in the latest campaign, Cash found himself dressed as a ‘babushka' at their Autumn/Winter 2023 show in Milan back in February, with a mop in hand. “I guess my relationship with Diesel all started when they flew me out to Italy for their AW23 condom mountain show in Milan in February, when I went as a babushka, cleaning the floors. Right after that, they reached out and started talking to my team about doing this legendary Diesel campaign with me as the face! I guess I cleaned the place too well.”

Getting deeper into his psyche, many things come together naturally to the musician, without the urge of trying. “You are trying, I’m not. I am. You care, I don’t. This question is more for the people how they feel! But it’s like someone almost needs to hit me with a hammer, because we are missing some legendary runs like John Galliano, Lady Gaga in this world because it feels so…bland?” Sharing more of his POV, DIESELTOPIA speaks even further upon the ethos of Tommy Cash - cult becoming cool, or vice versa, without trying. Bringing together some Diesel classics like the viral 1DR bag and Oval D hoodies, caps, belts and jackets, the iconic Diesel sense of self appeals to everyone, or as Cash likes to call it - as if you are trying to catch a big fish. “Nothing feels better than the feeling when you come up with a genius “big” idea, it’s like the birth of a newborn. Sometimes maybe it’s like impossible for him to be born or it is difficult in the process, but it’s nothing more beautiful when you catch the idea like a big fish.”

Speaking upon his love for Diesel’s mastermind Glenn Martens, Cash shared how fun and easy this project has been to create, and how easy it is to collaborate with a team that gives you full creative carte blanche. “The whole experience took on a super professional approach. The team was huge, with 100+ people on set as we shot at an old Italian mansion near Rome, with the whole idea being Children of Diesel. I think Glenn is absolutely on fire, I really admire him!” If there was a moment that feels the most him, this would be the one, looking out to more bigger things coming in the Tommy Cash universe. “ I’m looking forward to the album run I’ve been preparing and plotting for years now, which is about to come to fruition, so just watch this space!”
