Gucci collaborates with Adidas in a tailored sportswear matrimony for AW22.
The Guccification era of Adidas. This is what Alessandro Michele has been up to this season, debuting a new co-branded collaboration between Gucci and Adidas, solidifying the brand further in rejigging the old codes of luxury, merging it with the German sportswear giant in a intricate, cool and exciting way.
Michele ushered a new understanding of the blurred lines between sensuality and fetish last season with his Aria collection, and this season he is continuing the journey through black lace lingerie under long faux fur and a tilted beret to complete for good measure. The Italian designer took on the iconic symbols of Adidas – the three stripes from its signature tracksuits, and the leaf logo from its Originals division, and brought them onto signature Gucci tailoring. Bright green and blue suit trousers were given the side stripe treatment, paired with an immaculate double breasted matching suit jacket and completed with a two-sided brim cap – one part Gucci, one part Adidas.
Womenswear-wise, the classic Adidas V-neck dress was tailored, raising the shoulders and given a solid structure, through Michele’s ways. Completing with football-esque gloves with the brands’ blended symbols, there was grand attention to bags as the Diana tote was given the sports treatment.
Alessandro Michele is a master at creating beautiful parallels of style, often merging juxtaposed aesthetics, and this season is no different. There is a feeling of honouring the classic codes of sportswear, Adidas more specifically, by further opening the floor for discussion about whether style is only equal to high glamour.
